Mandarin Ratsnakes
Mandarin Ratsnakes (Elaphe mandarinus) are old world montane rat snakes ranging from N. Vietnam and throughout most of China. Known for their beautiful yellow and black patterns Mandarins are often thought to be difficult to keep. However, the increasing knowledge in the husbandry of these snakes has attributed to successful reproduction in captivity. Captive bred Mandarins have proven themselves to be quite hardy. E. mandarinus typically grow to between 30 and 40 inches, but a length of 5 feet is not unheard of. These snakes prefer cooler temps and should never be subjected to temperatures above the low 80’s. Mandarins are a wonderful species, but are not suitable for beginners.
